Abscess FAQ

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ABSCESS?

An abscess is a collection of pus that is accumulated in a cavity of tissue in which the pus resides and can become infected. This can be caused by a cyst, infected hair follicle or a foreign body.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE TO GET RID OF AN ABSCESS?

Usually an Incision and Drainage procedure is done where Dr. McKeown will put a small incision into the infected area and drain the pus out of the infected site. A small wick is normally placed in order to allow for further drainage over the next 24 hours.

WHAT RESULTS SHOULD YOU ANTICIPATE?

You should anticipate complete relief from the infected site. Also, you will be placed on an antibiotic regimen and will be seen back in 4-6 weeks to have Dr. McKeown reassess the area. At that time, Dr. McKeown will determine if any further action is required.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT POST-SURGERY?

You should anticipate the area closing up over the next 3-4 weeks at which time you will schedule a follow-up visit with Dr. McKeown.

How Much Does Abscess treatment Cost?

The cost of this abscess treatment will depend on several factors. The price can be affected by abscess severity, type of technique performed, surgical complications, and even allergies. Find out more by scheduling a consultation.
